3 killed as 6.7 magnitude quake rattles country


At least 3 people have been reportedly killed in Dhaka, Rajshahi, and Lalmonirhat when a 6.7 magnitude earthquake rattled the entire country. The quake was originated in India’s Imphal, yet jolted Bangladesh, Myanmar, and Bhutan in the early hours simultaneously.

According to US Geological Survey, The epicenter of the earthquake was 29km (18miles) west of Imphal and 33km (21miles) North West of Mayang Imphal, the capital of Manipur state in India near the Myanmar border and 352km (219mi) east north east of Dhaka, Bangladesh.

The tremor was felt throughout Bangladesh around 4:36am local time (23:06 GMT Monday). In Dhaka, most people rushed down to the streets in panic.

In the capital, a young man named Atiqur, son of Md Mainuddin, was killed in panic attack in Purbo Jurain of Kadamtoli area.

He lost consciousness after the tremor.

Later he was rushed to DMCH where doctors declared him dead at 6:16am, said Mozammel Haque, in-charge of Dhaka Medical College Police outpost.

In Rajshahi, a young man named Khalilur Rahman, 33, died due to panic attack while he was coming out from his house in Meherchandi area of city.

In Lalmonirhat, a resident of Patgram municipality -- identified as Nur Islam, 42 – died of panic attack.

Meanwhile, according to the Fire Service and Civil Defence control room, a six-storey building of Mazed Sarder Lane Sweeper Colony in the capital leant towards one of the sides. The residents were removed to safety.

The Fire Service and Civil Defence control room also received information that crack developed in two more buildings in the capital’s Old Dhaka and Jagannnath University campus on the aftermath of the earthquake.

About 35-40 Dhaka University students underwent primary treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) as they were injured while evacuating their halls hurriedly during the earthquake.

In Sylhet, at least 34 people, including four of a family, were admitted to MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital.

Commissioner of Sylhet Metropolitan Police Kamrul Hasan said four of a family were injured when a wall of a 10-storey building in Jindabazar area of the city collapsed due to the earthquake. – According to a news agency
