The Cabinet, with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair, okayed the draft of the Jute Act 2016 on Monday. Cabinet Secretary Md Shafiul Alam later told journalists that the draft of the new Act has been drawn up following court directives to promulgate a comprehensive law framed in Bengali by drawing on the various Ordinances and Acts issued during previous martial law administrations. The new Act draws on the provisions of the Jute Ordinance 1962 and the amendments to it in 1963, 1978 and 1983. Alam said there will be 32 clauses in this new Jute Act. It will provide for penalty for violations of the Jute Act, which touches on issues related to production of raw jute and jute-based products, marketing of jute products and powers vested in the government for the same, conditions for licences , creation of a development fund and development fee and powers to ban sale of raw jute and to seize book of accounts .Violation of the Jute Act can lead to a maximum penalty of three years in prison and a fine of Tk 100,000 or both. Previous laws did not provide for fine, though it provided for prison sentence, said the Cabinet Secretary, according to a news agency
