A defamation suit has been filed against BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia and Standing Committee Member Gayeshwar Chandra Roy for their ‘derogatory’ remarks about Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s contribution to the Liberation War and the actual number of 1971 martyrs. AB Siddiqui, president of the pro-Awami League Jananetri Parishad, filed the case at the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court on Monday. Metropolitan Magistrate Aminul Haque said at end of a hearing that he would pass an order later. Khaleda had remarked in a programme on Dec 21: "Today, it is said that some hundreds of thousands were martyred. How many hundreds of thousands were really martyred in the Liberation War is uncertain. Different books give different accounts.” Supporting the party chief’s doubt, Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, on Dec 25, suggested a ‘survey to determine the correct number' of martyrs. He also said the martyred intellectuals had ‘died like fools’ in 1971. Their remarks sparked a countrywide controversy. Ekattorer Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee has urged Khaleda to withdraw the comments and apologise. A lawyer has sent her a legal notice, seeking the withdrawal of her comments, while two cases have been filed against he, according to news agency.
