Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) members were deployed in Chittagong for ‘fear of sabotage’ as an aftermath of the Awami League and BNP rallies on January 5.
Six platoons of BGB forces have been garrisoned in Chittagong city, Sitakunda and Bashkhali, Maj Sabbir Ahmed, Additional Director of the paramilitary forces in Chittagong has confirmed. Maj Ahmed said, “BGB troopers are patrolling the city, along with Sitakunda and Bashkhali Upazilas to prevent any sort of sabotage.”
Both parties’ programmes are related to the second anniversary of the 10th parliamentary elections, which took place on January 5, 2014. Both the AL and the BNP had sought permission to hold rallies at Chittagong’s Lal Dighi, but police gave them clearance to hold rallies at Chittagong central Shahid Minar and Nasimon building, respectively.
After failing to hold rallies on January 5 last year, BNP chief Khaleda had called for a nonstop blockade which sparked off massive violence across the country. More than 100 people died, mostly in pro-blockade arson and bomb attacks, during the three-month-long mayhem, according to bdnews24.com. -Mithun
