An alleged criminal was killed in a reported gunfight between his associates and police in Rajendrapur area of Gazipur district on Tuesday night.
The alleged criminal was identified as Manir Khan,35, a resident of Shalna Kathura area of the city, the deceased was said to be involved in politics of Jatiyatabadi Juba Dal, youth front of BNP.
Police said tipped off that a gang of criminals, including Manir, was staying in the area for carrying out sabotage, a team of Detective Branch (DB) of police conducted a raid there at about 11:30 pm.
Sensing presence of police, the criminals opened fire at them, prompting the law enforcers to retaliate, triggering a gunfight.
Manir was caught in the line of fire and died on the spot while his other associates managed to flee the scene, according to a news agency report.
Later, police recovered the body and sent it to Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College morgue for an autopsy.
Manir was accused in several cases, including for sabotage and extortion, police said.
Officer-in-charge of DB Amir Hossain confirmed the incident.
