Dr Quashem dies
Dr Abul Quashem Chowdhury, father of Jatiya Party (JP) secretary general Ziauddin Ahmed Bablu, died of old-age complications at a Bangkok hospital on Wednesday.
He was 86.
Dr Abul Quashem, who had been undergoing treatment at Bumrungrad Hospital in Bangkok, breathed his last at around 1:00 am, said Jatiya Party presidium member Sunil Shuvo Roy.
He left behind his wife, four sons, two daughters and a host of relatives to mourn his death.
Born in 1929 at Kadalpur village under Raozan Upazila of Chittagong district, Dr Quashem, also the father-in-law of Rezaul Haq Chowdhury Mushtaq, former president of Chittagong Samity-Dhaka, earned doctorate degree from Calcutta Campbell Medical College (now Medical College, Kolkata) in 1947.
During his professional career from 1948 to 1961, he worked at different hospitals and organisations, including Dhaka Medical College Hospital, World Health Organisation, Chittagong General Hospital, Manikganj, Chuadanga, Meherpur, Kurigram and Bandarban hospitals as a medical officer.
Besides, Dr Quashem provided health services at Feni Mahkuma Hospital from 1962 to 1966 where he was known as ‘Quashem doctor’, according to UNB. – DH
