Public life continued normally in Dhaka and elsewhere in the country despite a nationwide hartal call by the Jamaat-e-Islami on Thursday.
The Jamaat had called the hartal to protest against the rejection of a petition by its Ameer, Matiur Rahman Nizami, by the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court. Nizami was earlier condemned to death by the International War Crimes’ Tribunal (ICT).
Deputy Commissioner (Media) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Maruf Hossain Sardar said that the police was out in full force as a precaution against possible subversion. However, there was no report of any violence.
Offices and educational institutions operated normally, while traffic was normal in Dhaka city and Chittagong. Buses, trains and launches headed for outlying districts also left for their respective destinations without any hindrance, according to a news agency.
