Teachers of Dhaka University (DU) observed a two-hour work abstention to press their demand to remove ‘discrimination’ in the 8th pay scale. They also threatened to go for an indefinite strike from January 11 if the government does not come up with any assurance to meet their demand.
The teachers also demanded punishment of government officials who are delivering statements against the teachers’ peaceful movement and demand.
Addressing the work abstention programme at DU, acting president of Dhaka University Teachers’ Association (Duta) Dr.Imdadul Hoque said, "We don't want to do anything harmful for students and we are always trying to take classes in any situation. But some bureaucrats have driven us to the present situation and we can't do anything now without abstention."
Bangladesh University Teachers Federation secretary general Professor ASM Maksud Kamal was also were present at the program held in front of the Arts Faculty building at DU.
Meanwhile, teachers of 37 universities observed the work abstention program, called by Bangladesh University Teachers Federation, on their respective campuses, according to UNB. - Idrak
