BNP candidate wins Singair municipality polls

BNP mayoral candidate Khorshed Alam Bhuiyan Joy won the election in Singair municipality on Thursday.

Joy bagged 6,876 votes while his nearest rival Awami League’s rebel contester Mir M Shahjahan got 4,828 votes.

Earlier, voting in the election, which was stayed by the High Court following allegation of irregularities, was held almost peacefully from 8am to 4pm without any break.

Earlier on December 1, the High Court stayed the election process for Singair municipality for six months on the allegation of irregularities in its voter list.

The EC on December 6 postponed the election to the municipality following the HC order.

However, the Supreme Court on December 7 stayed until January 21 the HC order, clearing the way for holding the polls, according to UNB. - Idrak
