Zia emerges champion in int’l rating chess

Grandmaster Ziaur Rahman emerged unbeaten champion in the Prime Bank 18th International Rating Chess Tournament after the nine- round games at the Bangladesh Chess Federation hall room in the city Thursday, reports UNB.

Zia, a player of the Bangladesh Navy team, earned full nine points  to clinch the title.

CM Sohel Chowdhury of Sheikh Russel Memorial Sporting Club finished runner-up with 7.5 points.

Bagging seven points each, IM Abu Sufian Shakil of Golden Sporting Club and FM Mahfuzur Rahman Emon of Sheikh Russel Chess Club placed third and fourth respectively by tiebreaking system.

In final round games, Zia beat Fahad, Sohel played draw against Shakil and Emon defeted Masum.

A total of 112 players took part in the event organised by Leonine Chess Club.

Former Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Muhammad Zamir distributed prizes among winners as the chief guest.
