A teacher couple at a remote village in Hatibandha received Bangabandhu Agriculture Gold Medal for their success in cultivation of orange.
Mozammel Hossain High School head master M Khalilur Rahman of Pashchim Sardubi and his wife Fatema Khatun Majumder , Purbapara Government Primary School teacher, received the award from Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Thursday.
They have set an example in the area by developing a successful orange orchard on plane land. The orange of their garden is sweet and tasty and they are growing the fruit on commercial basis.
The receipt of the award by the couple is inspiring to the farmers of Lalmonirhat, as the people in general had a notion that northern region of the country is not suitable for orange cultivation. It is only possible in the hilly areas of Chittagong and Sylhet, they believed.
The couple started cultivating orange in 2005 by collecting only one sapling from the market. As they got sweet and good quality oranges, they went for further plantation by collecting saplings from the plant through grafting. At present the number of plants in the orange garden is 350, according to BSS. - Idrak
