Malaysia, Nepal play goalless draw

Defending champions Malaysia played a goalless draw against Nepal in their first match of the fourth Bangabandhu Gold Cup International Football Tournament at the Shams-Ul-Huda Stadium in Jessore on Saturday.

Nepal made the first attack in the very 2nd minute by Rabin Shrestha’s long shot, but the referee whistled for off side before the success as two Nepalese players were in the wrong position.

Just after three minutes, Ananta Tamang of Nepal committed a foul edging outside the box and Malaysia earned a free kick. Nepalese goalkeeper Bikesh Kuthu defended his side well.

Malaysia had a chance to take the lead in the 19th minute. Mohammed Feris sent a low cross into the box for Bobby Ganjaless, but Bobby failed to reach the ball in time.

Nepal were closed to score in the 63rd minute, but Jagjeet Shrestha’s brilliant attempt from near the box went out touching the side post.

Prakash Budhathoki spoiled a chance for Nepal in the 86th minute as his close-ranged shot went wide. Both the visiting sides failed to create more lucrative attacks in the second half.

Malaysia will face the hosts Bangladesh in their second match of the league at the Bangabandhu National Stadium in Dhaka on January 12 while Nepal to face Sri Lanka at the same venue on the day, according to UNB. -Mithun
