Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested a fugitive convict from Shah Amanat Airport here on Sunday. He was sentenced to death in a murder case.
The arrestee was identified as Anwar Ashraf, son of Kashem Chowdhury of Panchlaish area of the city. A team of RAB-7 launched a drive at the airport and arrested Anwar around 10 am, said Shafayet Jamil, deputy director of RAB-7. Anwar arrived at the Chittagong airport by a domestic flight from Dhaka, he said.
On April 2, 2004, Noor Khalek Master, senior officer of Fatikchhari branch Golden Life Insurance, was stabbed to death by Anwar following enmity over Anwar’s suspension from the insurance company on charge of irregularities. Later, victim’s father filed a case with Fatikchhari Police Station on August 2, 2004.
On August 19, 2014, Judge Mamin Ullah of Public safety tribunal sentenced Anwar to death while acquitted s another accused-Golam Mostafa- as allegations brought against him could not be proved, according to UNB. -Mithun
