PM opens SCCS in Barguna Tuesday

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is scheduled to inaugurate a school-cum-cyclone shelter (SCCS) in Amtoli of Barguna district on Tuesday as part of the Fael Khair Programme for relief of cyclone victims in Bangladesh.

Saudi Prince Turki bin Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud, Islamic Development Bank (IDB) Group President Dr Ahmad Mohamed Ali Al Madani will also join the ceremony with the Prime Minister through videoconferencing, according to an official at the IDB.

Both the Saudi Prince and IDB President expected to arrive in Dhaka on Monday on a two-day visit, said an official at the Economic Relations Division (ERD) on Sunday. Before the inaugural ceremony, they will meet Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at her official residence Ganobhaban on Monday evening, PMO sources said.

The inaugural ceremony of the SCCS, to be held at Ghatkhali Secondary School in Amtoli, will also include handing over of 7 SCCSs as part the second batch 27 completed shelters in Borguna constructed under the Fael Khair Programme for cyclone victims in Bangladesh.

The IDB officials think the opening and handing over event will pave the way for the utilisation of the state-of-the-art facilities, fulfilling the long cherished dream of the local people. Each building apart from serving as a modern educational institution for 240 students will also give shelter to 2000 people and 500 heads of cattle during calamities which afflict Bangladesh from time to time, says IDB.

Prince Turki is the 7th son of the late Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz of Saudi Arabia, and former governor of Riyadh. Turki is also the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the King Abdullah Bin Abdul Aziz International Charitable and Humanitarian Foundation

Saudi King Abdullah, who passed away last year and requested not to reveal his name at that time, donated grant worth US $130 million in December 2007 for providing relief and assistance to the victims of cyclone Sidre in two categories. The government and IDB signed an MoU on May 12, 2008 to implement the projects jointly.
