JEDDAH — Anyone placing advertisements for hiring or offering sponsorship transfer of domestic workers will face legal action, according an announcement made by the Ministry of Labour on Sunday. Such ads violate the regulations of the ministries of labour and interior. So individuals and violating agencies will face penalties. The Ministry of Labour will file a case with the judicial committee at the Ministry of Information which will specify punishment for violating the media outlets. The Labour Ministry said that only licensed recruitment offices are authorised to publish such advertisements with their licence codes. The ministry said that such ads not only violate regulations but are also humiliating for domestic workers and goes against Islamic teachings.
Such ads are common on Instagram where even photos of maids and their language and work skills are posted. Many families announce on social media or in newspapers that they want to transfer the sponsorship of their maids for amounts ranging between SR20,000 and SR30,000, according to Saudi Gazette.
