The standing committee on railways ministry in a meeting suggested an increase of the train fares on Tuesday.
After the meeting, committee Chairman ABM Fazle Karim Chowdhury said, “The existing fares are very low. That’s why we suggested the hike.” “However, there are several factors here. Suggestions have been made to increase fares taking into consideration all these,” he added.
According to a media statement of the Parliament Secretariat, the panel recommended the hike after the ministry had taken up the matter with it in the meeting. Train fares were last increased in 2012 from Tk 0.24 to Tk 0.36 per kilometre on average.
The statement said the committee advised opening railway engineering department in all public and private universities and later establishing a fully fledged a rail university, according to bdnews24.com. -Mithun
