Countrywide daylong hartal on Wednesday

A district madrasa teachers have called a daylong countrywide shut down for Wednesday (January 13).

They called the hartal as a protest of the death of a student following triangular clash on a trivial matter among madrasa students, businessmen and Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) in Brahmanbaria. Maulana Mobarak Ullah made the announcement on behalf of senior teachers of Jamia Islamia Yunusia Madrasa of Brahmanbaria district on Tuesday.

Earlier on Monday night the clash left a madrasa student Masudur Rahman (25), wounded, who succumbed to his injuries early morning on Tuesday. Maulana Mobarak also demanded of the government to suspend Brahmanbaria Sadar Circle assistant police super (ASP) Tapas Ranjan Bose, sadar thana officer-in-charge (OC) Akul Chandra Biswas.

“The daylong hartal will be observed under the banner of ‘Tawhidi Janata’ across the country to press their demands,” he added. They also threatened tougher movement if their demands are not met.

Moreover, the protesting madrasa students on Tuesday morning uprooted the railway tracks leaving the rail communication suspended between Dhaka, Chittagong and Sylhet. Railway sources said three trains got stuck at Bhairab rail station in Kishoreganj district.

Some students vandalized on Tuesday the ticket counter, and doors and windows of the platform no. 1 of Brahmanbaria railway station. Witnesses said several hundred madrasa students agitated in Mourail rail gate area as the youth was killed in a triangular clash among madrasa students, businessmen and Chhatra League, according to a news agency. –Mithun/Anis
