President Md Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Wednesday expressed profound shock at the death of Lt General (retd) J F R Jacob, who played an important role as a major general of Indian Army during Bangladesh's Liberation War in 1971.
In a condolence message, the President recalled the role of General Jacob with deep respects in the Liberation War and said the Bengali nation would remember him (Jacob) for ever with gratitude.
"Bangladesh has lost a genuine friend in his death," said Abdul Hamid. He prayed for salvation of the departed soul of General Jacob and conveyed sympathy to the members of his bereaved family.
In another statement Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said "We have lost a valiant soldier of our Great War of Liberation. The nation with profound respect would remember the contributions of Jacob to the War of Liberation forever."
Sheikh Hasina prayed for salvation of the departed soul and conveyed her deep sympathy to the family members of the bereaved family.
Lt Gen Jacob, who negotiated the surrender of the Pakistani troops in Dhaka following the Bangladesh'a war of independence in 1971, died after a prolonged illness in New Delhi this morning at the age of 92, according to a news agency. -Mithun
