NETRAKONA: Harvesting of Mustard is going on in full swing in ten upazilas of the district during the last several weeks.
The Mustard growers are expecting a satisfactory output of the crop as they are getting better yielding rate from per hectare of land in everywhere of the district this season due to favorable climate condition and availability of quality mustard seeds, fertilizers and other agri-inputs.
District agriculture extension department (DAED) office sources said that the government designed a plan to bring 5,105 hectares of land under Mustard cultivation of the district this Rabi season with a target for producing 6,024 tonnes of Mustard.
But, the farmers could bring 5,747 hectares of land under the Mustard cultivation exceeding the cultivation target as many farmers showed their keen interest to cultivate Mustard on their farm land due to the crop's easy cultivation process, short duration and lower production cost compared to other crops, the sources said.
Talking to the BSS correspondent, over a dozen of Mustard growers in Netrakona sader and Barhatta upazilas expressed different views that some of them became interested for cultivating Mustard after being disappointed over the price fall of Aman paddy during the last Aman season and some of them interested thinking it as one of the important cash crops, pure edible and skin- protection oil seeds and due to the crop's easy and short term cultivation process and lower production cost.
Deputy director of the DAED Netrakona Bilash Chandra Paul said that Mustard farming has been gaining popularity day by day as the crop has already been recognized as a cash crop to the farmers as the Mustard oil are being exported in some of the foreign countries.
"Income from the Mustard oil export is boosting national economy now", the deputy director said adding that the Mustard oil are widely used as edible oil side by side with protecting skin of the people especially newly born babies in the rural areas of the country.
Following the directives of the government, the crops specialists and agri-experts of DAED Netrakona arranged training programs for the Mustard growers and carried out campaign for using organic fertilizer before Mustard cultivation and taking latest technologies of Mustard cultivation for making the crop cultivation program a success, Mr. Paul also said.-Asfar
