Journalists and other socio-cultural and political organisations in Khulna observed the 12th death anniversary of eminent journalist Manik Saha on Sunday with demand for intensified efforts to quicken trial of his killers.
"We want intensified efforts on part of the government to complete the trial," speakers told a journalists rally held coinciding with death anniversary of Manik Saha, who was killed in bomb attack on January 15 in 2004 near the KPC.
Speakers also noted that at least 22 newsmen including Humayun Kabir Balu were killed in the region over the past two decades but most of the masterminds still remained beyond the reach of justice.
Lawmaker of Khulna-2 constituency Mizanur Rahman Mizan told the rally that "non-appearance" of a crucial prosecution witness despite repeated summons largely hindered the progress of the trial.
Chaired by Convener of Khulna Press Club Sheikh Abu Hassan, the rally was addressed among others, by Mokbul Hossain Mintu, S M Zahid Hossain, Faruk Ahmed, Mahbub Alam Sohag, Mamun Reza, Anwarul Islam Kazol, Sheikh Didarul Alam, Tariqul Islam, Hasan Ahmed Molla, Hedayet Hossain, Koushik Dey Bappy and Shah Alam.
They earlier placed wreaths at a monument built on the KPC premises in memory of the slain journalists. Different organisations, including Manik Saha Smrity Parisad, Awami League and CPB also paid tributes to his memory while Chhatra Union of Khulna unit staged a candlelight vigil there at dawn, according to BSS. - Idrak
